🌿 why “treating yourself” is actually the most responsible thing you can do

February was a lot, wasn’t it? And here we are, already tumbling into March like we didn’t quite catch our breath from January 😅

Today, I want to talk about something that came up for me last May, because I think it might be living rent-free in your chest too.

I was sitting with my journal on a still Wednesday morning, feeling something I couldn’t quite name, somewhere between tired and empty, when I wrote myself a question I wasn’t ready to answer.

“What’s one small indulgence you’ve been denying yourself because you feel you haven’t earned it yet?”

I expected a quick answer. Instead, I sat there for a full five minutes. Blank. Not because nothing came to mind, but because the list was so long I didn’t know where to start.

A slower morning.

A beautiful candle I kept “saving.”

Time to simply sit without a task attached to it.

I’d been telling myself I’d allow those things after.

After the work was done.

After the goals were hit.

After I’d proved something to someone, though honestly I couldn’t even tell you who.

However joy isn’t a reward, it’s a living practice.

When you clear the belief that you have to earn beauty in your life, or rest, you make room for clarity, creativity, and calm to actually land.

JOURNAL PROMPT:

What’s one small indulgence or ritual I’ve been denying myself because I feel I don’t “deserve” it yet?

Now ask yourself:

“What would shift if I allowed it in, just a little?”

Write freely. No pressure to be profound. Just let your inner voice speak.

GUIDED REFLECTION:

Now that you’ve named the ritual or indulgence you’ve been holding at arm’s length, let’s gently explore the why.

Close your eyes for a moment.

Take a deep breath in through your nose, and slowly out through your mouth. Feel your body soften.

Now reflect on these questions, one at a time. You can write your answers down, or simply sit with them:

1. Where did I learn that I had to earn this joy? Whose voice or example taught me that ease, beauty, or pleasure needed permission?

2. What am I afraid might happen if I give this to myself freely? Be tender here. There is no judgement, only curiosity.

3. What would the most self-assured, elevated version of me say about that fear? Imagine her whispering back to you. What does she know that you’ve forgotten?

4. How could allowing this one ritual in (today, this week) support my healing or alignment? Think practically and emotionally. Let the answer surprise you.

When you’re ready, write yourself a short permission slip, as if you were a beloved child or friend. It can be as simple as:

“I am allowed to enjoy this now, not later.”
